The YWCA of Darwin is part of a worldwide women's volunteer membership movement, the World YWCA, one of the first independent international women's organisations in the world. Our purpose is to develop the leadership and collective power of women and girls around the greater Darwin area to achieve human rights, health, security, dignity, freedom, justice and peace for all people. The YWCA of Darwin has been operating since 1969 and became incorporated under the Associations Act in 1977. Like many YWCAs around the world, the initial focus of the organisation was to provide accommodation to young women, and to that end, Banyan View Lodge was established in Mitchell Street in 1974, just before Cyclone Tracey. The intention was to provide safe and affordable accommodation for young women who had come to Darwin for work. The YWCA of Darwin has expanded to provide a diverse range of programs that address the needs of different groups in the community. The YWCA of Darwin is a feminist organisation with a social justice agenda. We are committed to: - promoting women and girls full and equal participation at all levels of society
- working for social and economic justice for women and girls
- mobilizing women's collective power for action on issues of vital concern in the Northern Territory, in particular violence against girls, women and their families and the impact of homelessness on women and girls.
Through this web site, we aim to be accessible to women, girls and their families. If you are unable to find what you are looking for, or have any feedback please phone us on 08 8981 8323 or or email
